Stop Mesothelioma

This blogger advices against using the term mesothelioma to drive wadvertising revenue.
But I don’t think those ads are going to get you that 0.5% of CTR because it’s not the kind of stuff 1 person in 200 is looking for. It’s more likely to be 1 in 1000 or less. Well, maybe for the mesothelioma terms. The loan and mortgage terms would get more results, but your page/website would have to target this subject in order to attract people looking for this stuff and like I stated above, you’d need to be a reference in the domain.

Shorewest Versus Journal Communications

A look at the Shorewest versus Journal Constitution class action case.

Last week, a settlement was announced in the class action law suit brought by Shorewest Realtors and other advertisers claiming that the paper had inflated it’s circulation numbers to artificially increase the price of advertising. Some more details have become available today.

Living With Pain

From a post on health problems.

A lot of the more “modern” arthritis meds - Vioxx, Celebrex - etc. - don’t seem to work for me. If they give any relief, it is transitory; and given they have some rather interesting side effects, I don’t use them.

"Kennedy Sobriety Checkpoint" Big Success

An effort to reduce car accidents.

If you were out driving over the weekend, no doubt you saw police out in full force. If you were in DC this past weekend, you may have seen the citizen patrol: “Kennedy Sobriety Checkpoint”.

Cause Of Car Accidents

LOL.

Of course, there is the George Carlin therory to the two kinds of people who cause car accidents... everyone driving slower than you is an idiot, while everyone driving faster than you is a maniac. I'm sure a lot of us are going to go with Carlin on this one. ;)

Bush Advocates Malpractice Limits

Sounds like the malpractice lawyers didn't give at the Republican fundraiser.

President Bush on Monday in a speech to the American Hospital Association called for limits on medical malpractice lawsuits, despite the fact that Bush’s proposals are written for special interests and would not significantly reduce health care costs.

Prescription Spending Slows In 2005

Good round up on prescription spending after the Vioxx debacle.

There’s a report out stating that the amount of money spent on prescription drugs has slowed somewhat in 2005. Good news for employers and employees, and bad news for Big Pharma. The report suggests that the slowdown is due in part to the controversy over the CV complications of COX-2 inhibitors. While Bextra and Vioxx accounted for some $2.6 billion in sales in 2004, I don’t know how accurate this assertion is: Celebrex is still on the market and undoubtedly picked up some of the COX-2 slack.

Drug Safety Problems

Will the FDA ever regain public confidence after Vioxx?

I expect the FDA to ensure that medications on the market are as safe and effective as possible. But the countless deaths linked to Vioxx, several antidepressants and now ADHD drugs has made me doubtful that Congress is taking seriously problems in our drug-safety system. To restore my faith that the government is doing all it can to ensure the medicines I take each day are as safe and effective, please support drug and medical device safety reform efforts this year.

Wall Street Meets The FDA

A look at how Wall Street and the FDA dance with drugs like Vioxx.

The FDA has had a full plate with problems and issues, and now becoming almost entirely unpredictable can be thrown in on the list of problems. It wasn't that the FDA was ever fully predictable, but after recent drug and product recalls it has to make you wonder if they are becoming a Doubting Thomas. Bausch & Lomb's (BOL-NYSE) recent lens cleaner ReNu With MoistureLoc withdrawal, Merck's (MRK-NYSE) Vioxx woes, and even the Biogen-Idec (BIIB-NASDAQ) and Elan (ELN-NYSE/ADR) withdrawal of Tysabri are possibly ALL contributors to Neurocrine's woes this morning as it may be entirely possible that the FDA may be playing purely a defensive game.

40% Of Malpractice Cases Groundless

One view on medical malpractice is that it increases medical costs.

Keep in mind that not only do they account for 15% of all payouts, they also force insurance companies and doctors to pay millions of dollars in legal bills to defend themselves. All of this contributes to the rising cost of health care.

Oops, Wrong Leg

Another view on medical malpractice is that it keeps the medical profession honest.

The Republican philosophy is, if someone cuts off the wrong leg, it’s your problem and not the person’s who did it to you:

On Societal Responsibility

A good look at Childs v. Desormeaux, a recent Canadian supreme court case related to personal injury law.

This case caused me to think about the implications of personal injury law and the inequalities in how people with similar conditions but different causes are treated based on who pays for their treatment and equipment. The following is a discussion of that line of thinking, but I warn everyone that it’s purely for the sake of argument.

ER In Crisis

From a post on the decline in emergency room care in the U.S. and the negative impact of medical malpractice.

The soaring cost of medical malpractice insurance has forced many doctors to give up their practice and has shrunk the number of specialists, such as neurosurgeons, who are available to emergency departments. One doctor said he had 20 specialists on call five years ago. Today he has four. This is true in many hospitals throughout the nation.

Making Sense Of Vioxx

A post on the cost of the Vioxx lawsuits.

Read the entire thing. Mallaby takes a few gratuitous shots at Bush but he does get things right with regard to the damage wrought by an out of control system in which unscrupulous attorneys are able to manipulate twelve people into bankrupting corporations like Merck.
