How COX-2 Inhibitors Increase Heart Disease Risk
The evidence showing a strong association between selective COX-2 inhibition (from Vioxx™, Bextra™, or Celebrex™) and risk of heart disease and stroke has been piling on ever since Vioxx™ was removed from the market in the fall of last year. Now, we have studies that get into the nitty-gritty of exactly how COX-2 inhibitors do this. This is useful information because it might lead to clinical tests that help determine the risk-benefit balance of going on COX-2 medication and might even inform dosage.
